XPN Poll
1983
Class of '83: 5AC

Adrian Pasque

Adrian moved (back?) to Carlisle from South Africa and joined us in the 1st or 2nd year, if I remember correctly. Still in Carlisle as of 05/2003, he is the stores manager at Patons Garage.

Alan Scott
Contact XPN for e-mail address

"Scotty". Alan had an interest in CB radio. Still in Carlisle as of May 2003, working on milk tankers or something similar.

Angela Falder

Friendly with Grace and Carol. Angela works in a petrol station on Wigton Road and has a daughter who is the spitting image of her.

Anne Sutton

Anne lived close to Chris Western, on the A7 near Rockcliffe. She left Carlisle for the Manchester area (I think) around 4th year.

Anthony Carruthers

Tony lived a couple of doors down from me on Whiteclosegate. He had eight years  in the Navy before putting down roots in Edinburgh, where he now works for a PR company. He is married with kids.

Brendan Murphy
Contact XPN for e-mail address

"Smurf". Brendan and I were the stars of Julian Dare's Classical Studies lessons. Brendan left Carlisle to manage the "Principles for men" shop in Kendal. Back in Carlisle as of 05/2003, he's working his way up the Nestle factory in Dalston, not in a human fly style.

Carol Gamble
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Living in Leeds as of May 2003.

Caroline Askew

Caroline joined us fairly late - 4th year, I think - and is married to Martin Porter (see below).

Chris Carswell

"Carsie". Chris left us somewhere around 2nd/3rd year. I believe he moved to Plymouth.

Chris Nugent

"Nugget". Chris was tragically killed in a car crash near Morton School on Wigton Road, not long after leaving Trinity. Ex-pupil Nicky Thornthwaite was among the others who died in this accident.

Chris Western
Contact XPN for e-mail address

"Biddie". Chris and I were sort-of-mates. He never forgave me for pretending to have only one working lung, which I did to hide my extreme pain and lack of breath after he punched me in the stomach one day when I'd been remorselessly winding him up. His habit of shouting "bind on!" in rugby matches caused many a chuckle and as time went on he developed quite a fierce temper - there was a Paxo advert at the time where a guy totally lost it and so Chris became know as "Paxo" as well as "Biddie".

These days, Chris is married, with a little boy called Alexander. He is the
European Supplier Quality Manager for a company called Crown Cork and Seal, and lives in Leeds.

David L.

Details removed at his request.

Derek Sanderson

"Degs". Derek joined our form in 3rd year. I'd forgotten all about him and only remembered when he e-mailed me, having visited the XPN site. I believe he's living somewhere in the Manchester area.

Gillian Hay
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Another of the Rockcliffe contingent, Gill had a shop on Lowther Street. Proud Mum of Jack (born late 2002), she's living in London now that her BBC broadcaster husband Matt Williams is working for the BBC down there.

Check out her business's website at http://www.tiaras.f9.co.uk/

Grace Guyan
Contact XPN for e-mail address

I don't remember much about Grace except that she was matey with Carol Gamble and lived somewhere just off Dalston Road. She lives in Leicester, and works for the same company as Chris Western.

Ian Hill
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Ian, David, Tony and myself all attended Houghton Primary before Trinity. Ian now works in the pensions department for Cumbria county council and has a Danish wife and a motorbike, presumably not Danish.

Jared Willoughby

Jared had incredibly spiky hair and Doc Marten boots to match. Despite much pleading, my mum never let me have either. I remember her saying "only a certain sort of people wear those boots... and we're not that sort of people.". Ho hum. Now spike-free, he lives in Carlisle and is married with two children. His brother Jonathan is a presenter on Border News and Lookaround (AKA Border crack'n'deekabout).

Lindsey Graham
Contact XPN for e-mail address

...that's blonde Lindsey, not little dark-haired Lindsey who lived near me on Whiteclosegate. Another one of the Rockcliffe girls, married to Nigel with twin boys. She's a teacher at Houghton School.

Martin Porter
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Martin and I shared an interest in photography and music - we both played guitar and liked punky groups like SLF and The Damned. He later attended the technical college at the same time as I did, and sported a world-class mullet at the time. Still in Carlisle as of 04/2003 and married to Caroline Askew, with kids.

Martyn Slater
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Every class has one lad who is unfeasibly tall even in the 1st year, and Martyn was ours. He eventually stopped at six foot seven!!! Somehow, he fits into a Mazda MX-5, and has a motorbike as well. Martyn's nickname was "Spencer", which is a bit confusing as there was a lad in our year who really was called Spencer Slater! We got on well and did a bit of fishing together, if memory serves. I was absolutely made up to get a phone call from him in December 2000, after he came across the XPN. These days he is an independent financial adviser living in Preston with his wife and kids, of which there are at least two. Like me, Martyn has become a Christian. Good lad. He regularly visits Rwanda with people from his Church.

Nick Williamson

I left Carlisle in 1988 and settled in north-east Cheshire after living in Crewe, Chester and the Wirral. I work for American software company Mentor Graphics, developing applications for the automotive and aerospace industries. I spend most of my time programming but I occasionally get to travel to deliver training and consultancy; I get to see bits of France, Germany, Spain and Portugal on a fairly regular basis. Usually, it's the grotty places  where they make cars, but I can't grumble. Make mine a weiss bier.

I'm been happily married since 1990. I play and teach guitar, and like a bit of fishing, birdwatching, scuba diving, mountain biking and general keep-fit. Here's a photo from 1998-ish. I'm going to airbrush that shiny forehead out of my picture when I get a few minutes...

Paul Wasilkowski
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Paul was - and is - universally known as "Cossack". After a spell in the Navy, he is back  in Carlisle, where he is the assistant sales manager for Lloyds BMW. Doesn't look a day older than when we left school.

Paula Butroid
Contact XPN for e-mail address

I got on fairly well with Paula. I also remember her brother Dale zooming up Stanwix Bank at roughly 200mph on one of those silver and orange Suzuki Qatana motorbikes. As of 04/2003, she's single, working on the trains and doing a degree in criminal psychology.

Pauline Barnes

One of the small, quiet, clever and nice brigade. The kind of girl who'd let you copy her homework. Currently living in Chester.

Rachel Bloomfield
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Over to you, Rachel:

" I left Trinity with decent 'O' levels and some 'A's and went to Edge Hill
(Lancs Uni) and got a good degree in social sciences before traveling to Israel and working on a Kibbutz. I became a Christian at college (we seem to be everywhere) and had a terrific three years there with a really good group of friends. Lindsay Graham was there too and we kept in touch for a while ( she came to my wedding ). She invited Pauline Barnes to college and we went out for a meal together. She was studying at Liverpool Uni at the time.

I then moved to Devon, married Julian, studied at Exeter Uni. and qualified as a social worker. We caught up with Susan Cotterell in Exeter, who at the time lived in the city too. We moved to Gloucestershire, sold our house, and dropped out of the rat race for a time, buying a round the world ticket for a year. We managed to backpack our way around thirteen different countries before eventually coming home and succumbing to the inevitable.. buying a house, starting a family, picking up our careers again.

I don't keep in contact with ex-Trinity pupils but I did see Ann Sutton at Sheffield Uni. when I visited an old boyfriend. She moved to Sale in our third year and I missed her friendship for ages. I visited Gilly Hay in her shop in Carlisle once or twice. Once, I remember with my then baby girl. She kept in touch with quite a few people and used to fill me in a bit. We are hoping my parents will move with us back to Devon in the next few years. Once they do, there will be no need for me to visit Carlisle anymore, except perhaps with my children, who will no doubt suffer the boredom of an aging mother harping back to years past and exclaiming ' it used to be all fields round here!'."

Robert Matthews
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Robert's nickname "Trebor" arose when we worked out that his name spelt backwards is pronounced "Trebor Sweatums". He was a nice guy and he used to get me into discos organised for kids of employees at Web Offset, where his dad worked. Now known solely as Bob, he works for Cumberland Building Society at their head office.

Ryan Stark

My thanks to Martyn Slater for reminding me about Ryan. He joined us roughly midway through our five years, and came from Northern Ireland. He was a tall lad with spiky ginger hair and looked a bit like Thom Yorke from Radiohead, if memory serves. Martyn remembers him as a psychotic pope-hating unionist (an average one, then) who derived great enjoyment from the fights between Trinity and the nearby Catholic school, Newman (see "bumps & scrapes" on the stories page).

Sarah Jackson

That's "Mumphie" to you, mate. Sarah's mum ran the buffet in Carlisle station, a fact which probably helped me get my best-ever summer job; dishing out food and drinks from a trolley on the Euston-Sterling motorail service. Geeky ex-trainspotters like me will remember that this was a plum job due to the predominance of class 81/85 locos on that particular train. I used to do the stretch between Carlisle and Crewe, traveling one way as a passenger and working the other way, dispensing crisps & hot chocolate to the great and good. Getting back to Sarah... she lives in Holland now.

Susan Jackson

Susan joined us somewhere along the line and I never really got to know her. You can see her on some of Helen Carrigan's pictures on this site.

Susan Belton
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Over to you, Susan:

I am sorry but I do not remember an awful lot about Trinity as I ended up going to two further secondary schools. I moved from Carlisle to Southampton and then up to Rochdale where I finished my schooling then went on to catering college. I am now living in Bridport in Dorset where I have married and have an 11year old son and a 5 year old daughter. I am an assistant manager in a fish and chip shop/restaurant. I spotted your website while looking for the Trinity school site (just browsing). I thought it sounded interesting but never dreamed it would be written by one of my old class mates. It was really strange as all those familiar names unfolded. So sorry to hear about Chris Nugent.

I do remember the stink bombs though and I can also remember someone sticking a pencil in an electric socket in Miss Wright's class (was that you Nick?) and getting a bit of a shock. I can also remember dissecting eggs in biology and the music teacher who let us sing Boomtown Rats `I don't like Mondays` in  the choir. Also Ziggy Harper in her black cape looking just like a wizened old witch. I left Trinity in the 2nd year when the form teacher was Mr Foster. As a leaving present I received a green pen and pencil set from the class. I was friendly with Sarah Jackson and also later on with Paula Butroid and I am sure with others too. Sadly I never kept in touch with anyone, but it was great to see what a lot of the others have done since leaving. I will let my brother know about your site I think he will be very interested. He left in the 5th year at the end of 1979, His name is Simon Belton.

Susan Cotterell
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Over to you, Susan:

What was your nickname at Trinity? lots - Stephen Dodd called me "cotyledons" after learning about it in a biology lesson - I can picture it now! Rachel gave me "radar lugs" too - all is forgiven! Most of the time "Cottie".

Best things about the school: Really great friends in the tutor group - remember the parties/camps, (kids just don't have so much innocent fun these days) and fantastic opportunities for outward bounds and travelling.

Worst things about the school: Messing up my A levels

Favourite teachers: Now I come to think about it lots (apologies if I've missed anyone out and the sentimental essay about to follow!). Mr Evans for his support when I messed up my A levels and letting me do "Birds" for my A level module. I managed to use this project in every exam at Uni and even wrote a three hour exam question in my finals on "Flight" based on this! Mr Waugh for just being a great all-round guy - I still use his text books when I teach Geography at work and think of Trinity and remember the SS Uganda trip! Mr Sykes, we sang "Don't like Mondays" in the 1st year choir the next day after it was on TOTP. Mr Hammond for letting us use the record player at lunchtimes in the 6th form. Mr Boorman (and Mrs Wilkinson) for taking us camping in the 3rd year when they didn't have to. Mr Armstrong for the fun Maths club (I know it's sad but I really enjoyed maths - and still do). Mr Evans for great Biology teaching at GCE and Miss Wright (now Graves) in the first year - so much so I ended up doing it at Uni and now teach it. And of course Mr (Ron) Wright for all the Duke of Edinburgh awards and badminton club etc, for the opportunity of spending weeks of our lives in the Lakes and instilling the love of the mountains which is still in my bones.

Education after Trinity: 1 year resits at the Tech then 4 years doing Biology and Zoology at Dundee University. PGCE at Durham and still working as a teacher!

Career to Date: Taught in Hartlepool for the few weeks after qualifying, then had a fantastic job in a Country State Sec school in Devon. Where I met up with Rachel Bloomfield, Martin Ramshaw and Christine Gammage also living near Exeter. Now teaching Science and more and more ICT in Yeovil (it makes Trinity look like a very posh private school).

Where do you live now? Between Yeovil and Bristol in Somerset, just north of Yeovilton Air Base.

Details of spouse / partner, kids etc: Married Mark in 1993 (we met at Dundee Uni) after time in France he joined the Navy and is now a pilot. We have two great boys, Ran (Ranulph) born 1995, just like me, generally reliable and pretty compliant but unlike me very popular at school, and Ru (Ruaridh) born 1996, just like his father for those of you who have met him (Mark I mean), fun, reliable with an amazing memory but a wicked sense of humour when he gets going but not very tolerant of "rules" - drives his teachers mad! Two cats.

Old school friends you'd like to trace: Grace Guyan - I always wondered what she was up to so glad to see she made the reunion. I do bump into others from time to time but do get in touch via email.

Best thing that ever happened to you at Trinity: - now that would be telling!

If you could have your time at Trinity again, you would... : Be a bit more outgoing!

Any other details you'd like to go on the site? Really sorry I missed the reunion. In 1988 (to get a bit of extra money for Uni) I joined the Royal Naval Reserve (Navy's TA equivalent) and have kept going with this ever since. Current Unit is based in Bristol and work at home and abroad each year. Had the opportunity to go to Bermuda, USA, Caribbean (chased drugs runners to Columbia), Germany not to mention served in a number of Destroyers and have flown in all the Navy's helicopters and even hovered a harrier jump jet! Nearly got called up for Iraq but the Navy took pity on my Head teacher and the shortage of teachers and let me stay (I was a bit disappointed to say the least)! "Little" brother Stephen now living in Plymouth doing a marine biology PhD and also joined the RNR a couple of years ago. On 17th May (the class reunion) the RNR was celebrating it's centenary by marching at Horseguards parade in London which was a three line whip! Stephen was in the guard and I was in one of the marching platoons (parents very proud) hence I couldn't make Fantails I was actually really gutted but it was lovely to see the photos tonight on the web you're all looking really well and many haven't changed a bit!!

Stephanie Tuer
Contact XPN for e-mail address

Still in Carlisle as of April 2003, Stephanie is married with kids and running the family business (plant hire and house building, among other things) with her husband.

Stephen Dodd

"Doddy". Words fail me. As you'll see on the stories page, I rate him a top bloke despite all the hassle he gave me and just about everyone else at the time. Ferrets, pigeons, punky mohair jumpers... he even looked a bit like Sid Vicious into the bargain. Teachers dreaded him. He worked on the bins and managed to get himself run over by the bin lorry on one occasion. He is now a postie and, by all accounts, a thoroughly nice bloke. Younger brother Paul is THE Paul Dodd - the notorious football hooligan. Elder brother John is a solicitor with his own practice.

Robert Barnes - rodengcar@hotmail.com (added August 2001)

I was in Mrs Dennison and Mr Woods class.  My classmates included people like Simon Liddell , Andrew Ramsey , Mike Millican , David Martin , Deborah Ellis , Gillian Moscrop , Sandra Oddie , Allison Sandford . I have recently seen Brendan Murphy , Paul Wasilkowski ,Paul Blaylock, Pete Johnstone and Neil Hickey .  I still live in Carlisle (in Stanwix) with my wife and little boy.

Since leaving trinity I have just completed 15 years service in the Royal Air Force , where I am a corporal landing point commander in charge of a team of tactical fuel specialists . I see Simon Liddell whenever I come home on leave and an old friend Nicholas Dempsey is in the police in Sheffield. I was quiet and shy at school but I am the opposite now and I can’t understand where the year of 83 went to, especially the girls.

Martin sent me this pic of himself in the school rugby team, in 1982 - he's third from right on the back row. He hasn't sent me any names yet, so I've had to guess:

Back row, L-R: Bryn Evans (teacher and presumably coach), don't know, don't know, David Wallace, Dave Smith, Paul Harris, Nigel Watson, Martin Brown, don't know, Mike Hutton.

Front row, L-R: Andrew Ramsay, Neil Carruthers, Mike Neat, Michael X, Glen X, Steven Osgood, Gavin Somebody, Andrew Turner, Chris Western.

Names of some classmates: Paul Blaylock, Peter Harbach, Nick Dempsey, Hazel Atkinson, Gillian Robertson, Judith Hare, Sarah Bark, Callum Cowx, Ian Brown, David Taylor.

Best things about the school: The people, staff and pupils - very few gave me a hard time (exceptions - Mrs Sykes 'Who do you think you are, Charlie Chaplin?', Nigel Bainbridge and Mr Tiplady)

If you could have your time at Trinity again, you would... : Not flick Hazel Atkinson in the eye with my tie. Not let Nigel Bainbridge know where my door keys were kept. Stop Jamie Potter leaving for Southend with our shared Scalextric (although have since reclaimed it)

Peter Tindall (added 2000)

Peter lives in Canada now and is pictured looking forward to the Canadian winter. Check out his site at http://www.hope-tindall.com.

If you could have your time at Trinity again, you would... : I would play more football and less rugby

I still meet up with Brendan Murphy and Neil Carruthers occasionally. I remember one of the funniest moments was when approaching our class room, Neil decided to slap the bum of someone who he thought was a 6th former, but it turned out to be a rather shocked and bemused teacher. Don't know who was more shocked - Neil or the teacher! Brendan and Neil both work at Nestle's at Dalston.

Nick Wallace - bignick_w@yahoo.com (added March 2001)

Nick was in 5GS, along with Martin Brown, Andrew Hill and Iain McNee. He remembers Lisanne Bell as the best thing about the school, and Geoff Stott as the worst. His favourite teacher was Bryn Evans. Old school friends you'd like to trace: Julie Richardson especially, but anyone who was in 1L, 2Bj, 3G etc.

If you could have your time at Trinity again, you would... : Believe what everyone told me about schooldays being the best days of your life, and I would have enjoyed it more. I wouldn't have left before the end of the fifth year either.

Robin Brown (updated 21 October 2003)

Since leaving Trinity, Robin has become a full-on scary bloke, into big motorbikes, tattoos, body piercing, fetishism and that sort of stuff. He runs a website, www.londonfetishscene.com, that tells anyone who's interested what goes on at fetish events in London, but don't look at it if you're easily offended!

You can email him here: dogstarphotography@hotmail.com or here: robin@londonfetishscene.com, he'd like to hear from you.

Robin remembers: "I detested most of the people in my class, and none of them other than me went on into the sixth form. The best thing about the school was the good teachers (favourite: Mr Redpath), the worst thing was that it was very long". He says the best thing that happened to him was falling in love and making some good friends. He blames his early baldness on Peter Tindall's penchant for pulling his hair out.

After leaving Trinity, Robin went onto Newcastle Polytechnic and Southbank University. He lives in London and did a stint as a minicab driver before becoming a software developer and now a photographer.

Neil Fraser - amended December 2003

Neil does not want to make his email address public however, if you want to pass on a message please email it to the Webmaster and it will be forwarded to Neil.

Neil's classmates included David Gaddes, Keith Brown and Carl Tinkler. Not unlike me, he's firmly of the opinion that the best thing about the school was leaving it. After leaving, Neil became a professional musician but is now a technical support officer for Carlisle Library and a spare time web designer to boot. He married Fiona in 1990 (no kids yet) and would like to trace Nick Dempsey (apparently he's a detective now...). Neil has fond memories of the 5th year parties at Mick's club and says that given a second shot at Trinity, he would apply himself much more. You and me both.

"After leaving school in 83 I had the usual odd jobs, then at the start of 84 landed the job of drummer in a touring club band called... Oasis! I only wish we had patented the name! I toured all over the UK for a year... a real eye opener for a 16 year old. I've played in numerous bands over the years the most successful being 'The Daisychain Connection' in 87/88 featuring Stephen Dunn (Dunno). We were Cumbria's brightest hope, and had record companies flying up to our gigs, support slots with The Beautiful South, etc etc. Then our bass player was tragically killed. It all fell apart after that.

Click to see full size photo

I started work at Carlisle library in 85, and I'm still there now. I'm senior tech support officer in the computer department. I also do quite a bit of web development in my spare time, and am still playing drums in a a band.".

Janice Palmer (now Wills) treborwills@btopenworld.com (added 23 August 2003)

Year in which you took O levels / CSEs / GCSEs: 1983

Name of your class in exam year: I have a really bad memory - sorry

Names of some classmates: Corina Dawson, David, Claire Johnson, Sandra Oddy, Deborah Ellis, Susan Sutherland, Marianne, Spike (Simon), Harvey (artist extraordinaire)

What was your nickname at Trinity? Not very exciting I'm afraid, everyone just called me Jan

Best things about the school: Brucianni's chip shop - great chip butties & single fags

Great class mates - I remember having a really good laugh practically all the time, don't remember learning much though!*!

Worst things about the school: Leaving so suddenly - one minute I was half way through the first year in 6th form, the next I was living in London

Favourite teachers: Mr Sykes (RE) Mr Armstrong (Maths) and the chemistry teacher with all the kids and the facial hair - what was his name? He really helped me to understand chemistry and I had a major crush on him too.

Education after Trinity: Straight to working

Career to Date: Admin and secretarial type jobs - favourite one being distributor for Harley Davidson Motorcycles, I just looooove bikes!

Where do you live now? Ramsey, Cambridgeshire - moved here from London 3 years ago this August - it's nice and quiet, which is great for us but I'm not sure how the kids will like it in their teenage years. I thought Carlisle had almost everything a teenager could wish for - swimming, roller-skating, clubbing, cinema, pubs and magic mushrooms on your doorstep.

Details of spouse / partner, kids etc: Rob and I met in 1985 and have two children - Hannah 5 (6 in October) and Christopher 4. I won't lie and say that they are the best thing that happened to me, kids are the single most frustrating thing that could happen to anyone - they have no reasoning what-so-ever. But I do love them and the 'highs' of the roller-coaster ride are great.

Old school friends you'd like to trace: Corina Dawson - we were in touch until about 2 years ago and I would love to know if she's alright. Also, David (blast my memory!), used to call me Jani Williamson and my mum wheelie woman.

If you could have your time at Trinity again, you would... : Discover sex sooner - wow!
