Christine writes: "I
was informed of this site by Andrew Fleming. My name is
Christine Byers, now Cronin. Like Andrew, I was one of
the first "Trinity" pupils, starting in 1968, in Shaun
Ferguson's class, 1F, my other classes were 2R - Mr P
Rae, 3WA - Miss Wainwright, 4F - Mrs Fell and 5M - Mrs
Moses. I can remember a few from the school, I used to
be friends with Diane Ross, Sandra Galloway, Hillary Barling,
I can remember after we had sat our exams we used to play
scrabble with Brian Farish a lot of the time - he still
works in the railway station.
When we were in the second year, at St Johns in the Vale,
I can remember slipping on rocks above a long drop and
Mr Rae, my then form teacher saved me by grabbing my hair!
I used to go to the dinnertime discos run by Maxi and
Macca, they used to play a lot of motown! I left the school
in 1973, going to the Technical College to study Pre-Nursing
course and Cadet Nursing before starting my Nurse training
at the Cumberland Infirmary. I worked at the City General,
until 1988 when I moved to West Cumbria and got married
to Jim my husband who is from Aldershot. I have two boys;
Alex (12) and Matthew (10). I am presently working as
a practice nurse in a local doctors surgery. The photos
jogged my memory and the comments had me in stitches,
this is a brilliant site, I am also currently registered
on Friendsreunited.co.uk where there are a few others
from the school registered who are not here. Regards,
Chris Cronin" |

Clark - d_clark@ntlworld.com
(added January 2002) |
Names
of some classmates:
Keith and Neil Johnson, the identical twins, Ian Dalgleish
(great cricketer), Patricia Graham, Linda Grey (I think),
Michael Fendley, David Carruthers
(name is right, not sure if same class or
not), Andrew Dalton, Jane North, I think (a good swimmer),
Margaret Irons.
What was your nickname
at Trinity? Titch - I was smallest in the 1st year
Best things about
the school: No real thoughts on this one
Worst things about the
school: Again nothing really stands out
Favourite teachers:
Totally hopeless on names. I remember Spike Morlin
with his black graduation
gown, Eric Haugh, especially with a purple tracksuit
and his love of cross country in Winter for us all, Frank
Armstrong who loved to throw
a wooden chalk duster at miscreants.
Education after Trinity:
Biochemistry degree then Ph.D. in same at Liverpool
University (given my Biology grade 6 at O level and D
at 'A' level, it would
probably surprise some teachers and fellow pupils!
Career to Date: I
run my own small but internationally successful (well
we are still in business!) Biotech company for the past
14 years. Anything to do with DNA, human genome, cloning
and for fun, bacteria which grow in hot springs or deep
sea Black Smokers! Good excuse to go to US, Iceland, Azores,
Sicilian islands etc. :-)
Where do you live now?
Camberley, Surrey
Details of spouse / partner,
kids etc: Married to Angela for 21 years with two
daughters, eldest currently doing GCSE mocks :-(.
Old school friends you'd
like to trace: I'm curious as to what happened to
some I remember from the 6th form i.e. Andrew Sutherland
(utterly brilliant with 1's in all 'O' levels and A's
at A and S level), Lesley Richardson (linguist who went
on to Cambridge), Patricia Graham, Caroline Carmichael
(I think possibly in Jersey), both did Pharmacology at
university, Margaret Armstrong (daughter of Frank, maths
teacher).
Any other details you'd
like to go on the site? A few memories:
- Camping in the rain (for
the whole week) with Mosqitoes near Gilsland.
- Outward Bound at Lakeside
in the second year.
- Something, sometime at
Caldbeck.
- Climbing Skiddaw or Scafell
in superb weather in either lower or upper sixth with
a few others during summer term time, with a chemistry
teacher with a large ginger beard and fearsome reputation.
Not a clue who. Deserved pub at the end :-)
- Roger Beck, young Biology
teacher with a brand new purple MGB GT, started 1976
or thereabouts?
- Death of a guy called
I think Craig, an extremely good fisherman - if there
was a fish there he would catch it, drowned whilst fishing
in the Eden off some wooden piles on the stretch that
ran from the playing fields. 2nd or 3rd year in Winter.
Such a waste.
- Another one was a major
major fight in the 4th year that saw Gowie (can't remember
his real name but at the time trouble to be avoided)
getting taken apart by a lad, called I think Kevin from
another form in the same year, during one of the standard
lunchtime football knockabouts. Gowie had been looking
for a scrap and the outcome was very unexpected. Gowie
got totally totally beaten up. Kevin came out without
a scratch other than sore knuckles and Gowie's face
was a mess. I remember us all waiting outside metalwork,
before we were let in, for both to turn up after seeing
the head. I don't think anyone was sorry about the actual
outcome of the fight, kind of just reward for past grief
Note

My time at Trinity
was at the very start of the school's life as I was a
member of the first year intake in 1968. I loved every
minute of my time at the school. In my early days Mrs.
(Ziggy) Harper was head of Lower, Mr. Wilson was head
of Middle with Mr. Williams head of the whole school,
my form teacher was Mrs. Stephenson in my first year,
I have great memories of St John’s in the Vale in
that first year with Mrs. Stephenson’s Husband who
walked the legs off us all. My classmates included Steve
Watts, Andrew Birks, Colin Thursby, Jim Goode, Steven
Sanderson, Stephen Kelly, Joan Cherry, Margaret Ferguson,
Rosemary Earl, Judith Mawhinney, Christine Sewell, Pauline
Fisher, Lucija Cablis, Jacqueline Coupland, Francis Anderson,
Paul Thirtle & James Clapperton. Other people I remember
were Brian Wynne, Mike Tattersall & Derek Laurie who
still today remains a great friend of mine and is the
only one I still keep in contact with. My fifth year form
was 5H (Eric Haugh). I can remember Mr. Ferguson (woodwork),
Phil Towers, Joe Roe, Frank Armstrong, Ian Young, Bert
Clulow, Freda Quan, Shaun Ferguson & ? Robinson (Big
man Rob).
After Trinity I attended Carlisle
College and worked in the building trade for three years
then worked for John Menzies for three years before moving
to Carlisle Web Offset where I stayed for 20 years until
being made redundant in 1999 because of its closure. I
am married to Claire (Willis ex Trinity 1976), and we
have three grown up children and we have one grandchild.
I would like to here from anyone
who remembers me!
