I was
the last German language assistant back in 1968 before the
former Carlisle Grammar School went comprehensive ( I do
remember old staff members lamenting about the arrival of
the foot and mouth disease at " their school " ...). I remember
some names of long deceased teachers that most of the Trinity
pupils will never have heard - Sam Hodges, Bill Spears ,
R.(?)Watson, D.J.W.W. Then there were the middle-aged: Shaun
Ferguson, Eric Haugh , John Main(e)...
My reason for this entry is as follows : At the end of term
1968 there was made a photograph of all staff members which
then appeared in a yearbook. I lost my copy and I would
like to know if there is any of your readers who can provide
me with a photocopy of the above photograph and the list
of names of all teachers.

Update
12/2002: Uwe writes "Hi, you posted my entry in the
section "Can you help ?". As it was successful,
I would like you to mark my letter with a suitable comment.
Andrew Fleming sent me an excellent copy of all staff members
plus a copy of the Carliol of 1968. I would appreciate if
you left my entry in the above section, as it triggered
off some nice contacts." |
| The
strange room (added 14/01/2002) |
|
"Our
studio is based in a room which we believe used to be
an office, but we aren't sure. It is in lower school,
opposite the dining room, and next to the doors facing
the arena. There is a small cleaners cupboard next to
us. The door is divided in two, like a 'hatch'. Does anyone
know what as occupied this room in the past? |
Colin
Matthews writes "Was that 'mysterious room in lower
school' not used as a 'tuck shop' where you could buy
sweets/pop at break times ?
Phil Doust (1978 - 1982)
writes "Here's some more info on the room in lower
school. When I started in 1978 this room was used by the
Further Education department as their office before moving
to the room on the left hand side as you came in through
the front dose of lower school after that it was just
a store room"

& Irene Evans (added 04/01/2002) |
| Peter
Cartmell (plsj@gate.net)
writes: "Hello,
My name is Peter Cartmell and I'm trying to locate two
friends of mine, Bryn and Irene Evans. Bryn and I were
at University together in Liverpool and I was Best Man
at their wedding. We lost contact many years ago but I
managed to trace them to your web site (confirmed by the
photos!). I see that there is a comment that they were
moving to Spain? If you have a contact address, e-mail
or phone number, or can put me in touch with someone who
has, or can help in any way, I would be very grateful.
I would love to get in touch with them again." |
| Nick
writes: Andrew Fleming was able to help Peter by supplying
the Evans' e-mail address. Problem solved - thanks Andrew. |
| Graeme
Harker's mates (added 29/10/2001) |
Graeme
(ag.harker@virgin.net)
writes: "Hi Nick, any chance of putting the following
request somewhere on the Trinity site? I'd like to get
in touch with four ex-schoolfriends of mine, and maybe
someone out there may know where they are! Steve Faulds
(6th form 78/79 & 79/80) - last heard of was a gamekeeper
or something! Gareth Moore (6th Form 80/81 & 81/82)
- became a journo? Carole Tegerdine (6th Form 80/81 &
81/82) - moved to Gillingham in Dorset 10/15 years ago
- I think!! Stephen Dudley - left after 5th form in 78." |
| Assorted
teachers (added 21/07/2001) |
Rosemary
Everett (rosemarytoon@yahoo.co.uk)
writes "Nick, has there been any word on Mr Hitchins?
He taught Latin at Trinity and had the nickname 'Scarface'.
Cheers, Rosemary."
Another ex-pupil - who wants to remain anonymous - would
love to find out more about what several other teachers
are doing now. He's interested in hearing about
"Melvyn King, Miss Turner (Violet?) - was old then
(1974/75)- must be dead by now I fear. She was for many
years a missionary in the Third World and lived at top
of Knowe Road in Stanwix. Mike Fossey (chem) - lived in
Rockcliffe, Morphy Richards (chem), Dr Mike Beattie (bio)
- lived in Hayton, Ron Groom (bio) - lived on Brough Road,
Dave Ramshaw (phys) - lived in Belle Vue, Mike Byrne (chem),
Miss Julie Elliot (later married I believe), John Waugh
(geog), Gillian Sykes (RE), Julian Dare (he wrote a letter
to The Times a couple of years back from Oxford), Joe
Roe (bio), Bryn Evans (bio)".
Have you seen these people? Drop a line to the XPN if
you know what became of them... |
Shaun
Ferguson writes "Morphy Richards died - of Alzheimer's,
I think. Melvyn King - retired. John Waugh? doesn't he
mean Dave Waugh? as in 'high speed write a book a minute
Waugh'. Dave Ramshaw's another who's been writing a book
a minute - all local, railways etc.". |
Andrew
Fleming writes "Miss Turner must have died by now,
she attended St Aidans Church on Warwick Rd - the same
church my wife attended, but sadly has not been seen for
many years. Ron Groom still teaches at the school. Dave
Ramshaw still comes into the school from time to time,
as he is involved with the Observatory on the school site.
Bryn Evans retired in the summer and has just emigrated
to Spain with his wife. |
Robert
Grayson writes "Joe Roe lives in Burgh-by-Sands,
teaches at Morton, still does some farming and is married
to Sue Woodman who taught science and games at Trinity
but now teaches at Caldew I think.". |
Duncan
Bruce writes "Mike Fossey went to be a Headteacher
in one of Workington or Whitehaven (the
former, I think) and is now retired, last heard of living
in Cockermouth. |
| It's
a knockout (added 21/07/2001) |
Shaun
Ferguson writes "Here's a thought - but I can't remember
which girls or what year.... a Trinity team (or maybe
a Carlisle team with Trinity girls in) took part in It's
a Knockout (and met Eddie Waring and that other [Stuart]
bloke whose surname I can't remember but who tried to
offer them brandy... with ulterior motives...). All very
vague, but it might prove an interesting tit-bit to stir
a memory chain somewhere.
Were
you one of the girls? Please contact the XPN... |
| Looking
for Carlisle Grammar School ex-pupils (added 06/04/2001) |
"Hi, I
would like to find out if the fathers of any of the ex-pupils
of Trinity School were ex-Carlisle Grammar School pupils
between 1954-1960. As there does not seem to be an ex-CGS
pupils web site anywhere, this is the only way I may be
able to make contact with old school mates."

| Sally
Britton (added 19/12/2000) |
Where
is Sally Britton and what is she doing? Ex-pupil Hayley
Richardson (nee Graham) believes Sally is married with
kids and living in Hull, and would like to get in touch.
Please e-mail the XPN if you can help. |
| Nigel
Antony Brown |
I
came across your site whilst checking out the Knowhere
Board. I regret to inform you, I did not go to Trinity
School, but St. Aidans instead! I would like your help
though if you can. I knew a boy who went to Trinity back
in 1980 (ish). We were both members of the Carlisle Green
Room Theater as well as the Carlisle Musical Society.
We were great friends. His name is Nigel Brown (Middle
name Antony). I know he moved to Gloucester for 6th form,
but he moved back some years later and opened an Antique
shop in Carlisle. His mother (Pat) owned (or still owns)
a Beauty Shop. I moved to California in the USA in 1986
and have lost touch with him.......I would love to find
out where he is and try to contact him again. Other "Trinity"
Pals of mine were: Andrew Cunningham, Alan Barnes....
and I think most members of the Green Room were from Trinity.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Sincerely,
Debbi Weiss

Susan
Turton (sturton@whickhamschool.org)
writes: "Saw your message on the Trinity XPN site.
I remember Nigel Brown and that he opened an antique shop
in Carlisle - it was off Fisher Street in one of the little
lanes (further down than the pub - there was Hudson's
coffee shop across the courtyard) and is still there.
Don't know if he is though. He was the same age as me
and would have done his O levels in 79 and A levels in
81. Don't actually know where he is, but it brought a
memory from the past!! Didn't recognise any of the other
names. However someone you would know - John Metcalfe
taught me at Primary School! My mum often sees him around
Carlisle." |
| F.R.
Kitto |
Please
can you tell me if Trinity School was once Carlisle
Grammar School? If so, I believe my great grandfather
was once Headmaster - Frederick Richard Kitto. I am
trying to find anything I can about him. Do you know
who I could ask for any past info, records etc. Thanks,
Susan Fitzmaurice (nee Kitto), SFitzM@aol.com |
John
Fearn (johnfearn@lineone.net)
writes: "Trinity School was formed in 1968 from
the Carlisle Grammar School and the Creighton Margaret
Sewell School. I was a pupil from 1969 to 1976. The
old Grammar School buildings formed the Upper School,
housing the Fifth and Sixth forms. At that time the
corridor leading to the Old Hall was lined with photographs
of past Headmasters. I don't know if they are still
there, but I'm sure a phone call to the school would
confirm one way or another." |
Professor
Don Whitehead (d.g.whitehead@eng.hull.ac.uk)
writes: "I read your query whilst scanning through
the Trinity School Ex-Pupils Network. I cannot claim
membership of this excellent network as I was a pupil
at Carlisle Grammar School (1949 - 1956) and therefore,
presumably, do not qualify. However, I can tell you
something about F.R.Kitto. I have in my possession a
copy of the Carlisle Grammar School Memorial Register
1264 - 1924 (it was my father's - he was a pupil in
1922). According to this book, F.R.Kitto was appointed
English Master in September 1878. He left at Xmas 1883.
He was not Headmaster. At any rate, not before 1924.
There are no further details. If anyone is likely to
know more, it will be Malcolm Ward, who can be contacted
at Cumbria Insurance Brokers, 29 Lowther Street, Carlisle.
CA3 8EN. Malcolm, who was a contemporary of mine, has
been collecting information about the Grammar School
for many years.
Kind regards, Don Whitehead. |

Husband thehusbands@tiscali.co.uk
writes "Mrs Thompson (although I knew her well enough
to babysit - once - and her husband took a Stanwix Saturday
League Football team for a year - I always still call
all teachers Miss, Mrs or Mr)is now working in the second
hand bookshop on Castle Street - it's called Bookcase
or Bookends sorry but I only get to Carlilse once or maybe
twice a year" |
| Christine
Pearson (PE) - added 12 October 2003 |
Former
pupil John Fearn asks "Is anyone still in contact
with former Trinity PE teacher Christine Pearson? I
think she left in 1975, moving first to Beacon Hill
School at Aspatria and then marrying and moving to Scotland.
Chris ran an Archery Club in Upper School, and organised
various ski trips to the Cairngorms.
Looking back, Chris was probably more responsible than
anyone for my life long love of the hills. I'd like
the belated opportunity to say thank you, so if anyone
can put me in touch, please e-mail me at the following
address : johnfearn@lineone.net"

Steve
Bell (ex pupil Carlisle Grammar, left 1966/67) recently
sent an email to the XPN :
"I wonder whether you, or any of those who log
onto this site, as I do, know anything of the whereabouts
(state of health, etc.) of Fred (WF) Dowlen, who taught
chemistry (and for me and a select few, the sport of
rock climbing), during the mid 60's. The last thing
I knew of him was when he moved to somewhere in Yorkshire.
I well remember a slide show he gave one afternoon when
it was too wet for games - my, it must have been bad,
remember those cross-country runs across the park! He
talked about a climb he had done on the Aiguille du
Midi in Chamonix, and I was hooked. I never got to climb
the Aiguille and only saw it for the first time last
week(!) but I did become a climber - of sorts".
If you can help Steve with the whereabouts of Fred Dowlen
then please e-mail him direct at the following address

recently sent an email to the XPN :
Hello, I am trying to contact Alan Irving who I believe
was a pupil at your school. He became a professional
footballer, played for Liverpool, Shrewsbury Town
and latterly in Japan in the late 1980's. He then
went on to sell cars in Edinburgh for Reg Vardy, Jaguar
and finally Lexus but left some time last year. He
lives just outside Edinburgh and possibly has his
own car business now.
Can anyone help me please ?

| All
Girls School in Carlisle area - added 8 August 2005 |
Alvaro Pacheco
recently sent an email to the XPN :
"Hello Webmaster, I've
got a photo postcard that is intringuing me. It is
the picture of an all girls class. The girls are wearing
uniforms with a crest on it. This card was published
by F.W. Tassell & Sons, Carlisle.
After snooping
around I found out that a F.W. Tassell was the Mayor
of Carlisle 1930-1931. The fancy light fixtures on
the picture seem to point towards 1925-1935. Looks
like the mayor was also a Photographer or Publisher.
The building itself has a high ceiling and indeed
the windows are placed quite high. Looks like there
are two windows in the classroom as seen from the
light entering the room. The class seems to hold about
44 students.
I've tried to
identify the school but am unable at the moment. The
key seems to lie in the crest on the uniforms. I
am sending you a scan of the picture as well as a
close up of the crest. If you could help me in my
endeavour I would be grateful.
Best wishes,
Alvaro"
If anyone can
help Alvaro then send the details to the webmaster
and these will be passed on.
